The Lexington Fire Department has announced the appointment of Owen Ives, a fifth-grader from Veterans Park Elementary, as the 2024 Junior Fire Chief. This program is part of the department's Division of Community Services, which focuses on educating residents through initiatives like the Citizen's Fire Academy, hands-only CPR classes, and fire extinguisher training.

October marks Fire Prevention Month, during which the department emphasizes its fire prevention theme: "Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you." The Lexington Fire Department prioritizes educating the community about fire safety. "Fire prevention is the top priority for every fire department, and smoke alarms are the best tool to make your home safer by alerting you when smoke is detected," stated Fire Chief Jason Wells. He further commented on Owen Ives' selection by saying, "Owen's poster and essay truly caught our attention."

As Junior Fire Chief, Owen will have several responsibilities. According to Chief Jason Wells, "Owen will represent the Lexington Fire Department while touring local businesses and landmarks, participating in media interviews, and attending meetings with me, the LFUCG council, and Mayor Gorton. Throughout these engagements, Owen can promote fire safety and share this important message with a broad audience."
