The City of Lexington is advancing its efforts to address odor issues in the sanitary sewer system. Smoke testing will commence in the Meadowthorpe neighborhood during the week of September 9, followed by the Cumberland Hill and Pinnacle neighborhoods. The testing is expected to conclude by early November.

Residents within the smoke testing areas will receive notifications via door hangers prior to the commencement of tests. It is common to observe trucks on streets and workers around manholes during this period. The smoke, which may exit through vent pipes on roofs or other buildings, is a normal part of the process.

Contractors from Hydromax will introduce non-toxic, white smoke into manholes. Should there be any cracked or broken sewer pipes, smoke will emerge from these locations. Property owners will be informed by the Division of Water Quality if such issues are identified on their premises, with repairs typically being their responsibility.

Residents in scheduled testing areas are advised not to call 9-1-1 upon seeing smoke emanating from vent pipes or ground surfaces but can contact the Fire Department's non-emergency number at (859) 231-5600 for concerns.

Although the smoke used in testing is non-toxic, individuals with heart problems, emphysema, or other respiratory conditions should take necessary precautions. Additionally, shift workers who sleep during daytime hours and those who keep pets in basements should also consider protective measures.

In related city updates: due to Labor Day observance on Monday, September 2, there will be no waste collection services; traffic on North Upper Street between Main Street and Short Street will be restricted to one lane from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 18.
