Businesses in Lexington are celebrating National Parks & Recreation Month with special releases. The month is a busy time for Lexington Parks & Recreation, marked by summer camps and numerous weekly events and programs. For the third consecutive year, local businesses will feature collaborative releases each Friday of July, with a portion of proceeds going toward planting trees in local parks.
“We love celebrating National Parks & Recreation Month each year with a calendar full of events and programs for people of all ages,” said Parks & Recreation Director Monica Conrad. “Between our Fourth of July festivities kicking off the month and the numerous other events and programs throughout July – there's no shortage of ways to celebrate with us!”
The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) designated July as National Parks & Recreation Month beginning in 1985. This celebration encourages exploring, enjoying, and celebrating local parks, facilities, events, and programs. Activities include nature programming, concerts, golf courses in full swing, community center activities, and public pools.
In addition to these activities, Lexington Parks & Recreation has partnered with local businesses for the third year to release a collaborative product each Friday in July. Proceeds from these releases will fund tree planting through Trees Lexington.
“Our third year of collaborations includes another amazing group of businesses to celebrate National Parks & Recreation Month with,” said Paul Hooper, Information Office Supervisor for Lexington Parks & Recreation. “Coming off the success of the collaborations the past two years, many selling out at record speeds, we are excited to work with Sav’s Gourmet Ice Cream, Third Street Stuff & Coffee, Great Bagel & Bakery, and Wise Bird Cider. We can’t thank them enough for their support of our parks and love that they can be a part of planting some new trees around town!”
The collaboration schedule is available on lexingtonky.gov/parks.
Parks & Recreation is a division of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government overseeing over 100 city parks and natural areas along with six pools, five golf courses, community centers, recreational programs, and three arts venues. Due to the Fourth of July holiday on Thursday, there will be no city waste collection on that day.
