Representatives of the City’s Division of Environmental Services joined Mayor Linda Gorton in declaring April 22 as “Earth Day” in Lexington. Mayor Gorton emphasized the city's commitment to promoting a sustainable future, stating, "Earth Day is an annual reminder of the constant need for environmental action."
The city has been actively involved in environment-focused initiatives, with nearly 450 volunteers recently planting 4,300 trees at the 2024 Reforest the Bluegrass event. Additionally, the Solarize Lexington program's first year saw the installation of over 70 solar arrays, saving 672,000 kilowatt hours.
Mayor Gorton highlighted the importance of protecting Lexington's natural beauty and resources, stating, "Lexington is home to some of the most pristine greenspace in our country, and it is our job to protect our natural beauty and resources."
Residents of Lexington have the opportunity to participate in various events to observe Earth Day, including the spring mulch giveaway on April 20. Additionally, after delays due to severe weather, sanitary sewer construction has now reached the intersection of Gainesway Drive and Greentree Road.
The city's dedication to environmental sustainability and the celebration of Earth Day reflect the ongoing efforts to preserve the natural environment and promote eco-friendly practices in Lexington.
