Lexington, Mar 22, 2024 - A grant program available to social service agencies in Lexington has broadened its eligibility criteria to encompass a new priority area - mental health. This expansion aims to provide additional support to vulnerable populations within the community.

Mayor Linda Gorton emphasized the significance of assisting local social service agencies, stating, "Our support of local social service agencies is important to helping those most in need in our community." She further highlighted the importance of addressing mental health concerns, which impact numerous individuals in the city.

According to Kacy Allen-Bryant, the Commissioner of Social Services, the "Extended Social Resource" grants, also known as ESR, will fund initiatives focusing on community wellness & safety, childhood & youth development, food insecurity & nutritional access, and now, mental health. Allen-Bryant stressed the intention to finance innovative programs that employ best practices and evidence-based models to tackle mental health issues.

The grants allocated for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years will be overseen by the City's Department of Social Services. Additionally, they will supplement the Emergency Shelter Priority Area funding managed by the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention.

Community organizations interested in learning more about the upcoming ESR grant program are encouraged to participate in an informational workshop webinar scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26. Advance registration is required for attendance.

In other news, a section of Devonport Drive will undergo closure starting Wednesday, March 27, to facilitate sewer construction, with the closure anticipated to persist for two weeks.

Furthermore, individuals are urged to dedicate sixty minutes to the planet during Earth Hour this Saturday, providing an opportunity to engage in volunteering, learning, or supporting initiatives to enhance the environment.
