Residents of Lexington, Kentucky are gearing up to celebrate Earth Hour this Saturday, March 23, as part of a global initiative to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. Jada Walker Griggs, Sustainability Program Manager Senior, expressed the city's enthusiasm for the event, stating, "Lexington has participated in Earth Hour for several years since 2014."
The City of Lexington, along with various community partners, is offering a range of activities and events for residents to participate in throughout the day. This year, Earth Hour coincides with Water Week, highlighting the importance of appreciating and exploring the city's creeks. The sixth annual Reforest 5K Run/Walk at Hisle Farm Park will support Lexington's efforts to increase the tree canopy and restore streamside forests.
For those seeking a more leisurely experience, there will be guided mindfulness walks, bird watching sessions, and a screening of "Our Planet" at the local library. Volunteer opportunities to clean up natural areas at McConnell Springs and Raven Run are also available. The day will conclude with a Hot Chocolate Ride along the Legacy Trail at Coldstream Dog Park.
Individuals who prefer to celebrate at home can engage in activities such as planting a pollinator garden, storytelling by candlelight, or upcycling projects. Participating in Earth Hour not only benefits the planet but also sets the tone for Earth Day on April 22.
To showcase their Earth Hour activities, residents are encouraged to use the hashtag #EarthHourLex on social media. The World Wildlife Fund, the primary sponsor of Earth Hour since its inception in 2007, continues to promote global environmental consciousness.
In addition to Earth Hour, the City of Lexington is excited to launch a new initiative called Lex Grow Trees, further emphasizing the community's commitment to environmental stewardship.
