We Had The Pleasure Of Introducing You To Lt. Alexus Jones

We Had The Pleasure Of Introducing You To Lt. Alexus Jones.

Here is what she had to say when asked a few questions for Women in City Leadership Month:

To describe my role within the City of Nicholasville I am a Lieutenant on patrol shift for the Police Department. As a Lieutenant, I am responsible for running a shift and responding to calls for service. I have seven officers on my shift and one Sergeant, we work 12-hour shifts, and our squad is currently working 6a-6p. During my shift, I will assist officers if they have questions about calls for service or completing paperwork. I check daily paperwork and reports that are turned in and ensure that our shifts payroll is accurate and turned in at the end of the week. I also complete yearly performance evaluations for the officers.

I am also a member of several specialized teams within the police department, which include Collision Reconstruction, the Honor Guard team, and the Hostage Negotiations team.

When I'm not working and spending time with my family, I run. Over the last ten years, running has become my passion. Not only does running keep me in shape, it also gives me time to clear my head and process all the tragedy that comes with the profession. I have discovered that I like to see how far the human body can be pushed and have begun ultra running. Ultra running is any distance  over a marathon (26.2 miles). So far, I have completed three ultra-marathons and have two more scheduled this fall with one of those being a 50-mile race. It's invigorating to push your body past its comfort zone and see just how far you can go.

The woman who inspired me most would be my paternal grandmother. She influenced me the most during my formative years into my teenage years. My grandmother Jones became a widow in her 50s and was left a business to run and two teenage boys to raise. She never remarried. She kept her business going and throughout the years grew it into a thriving company. I saw her work hard and achieve many successes. Her dedication showed me that you can be successful if you work hard and stay focused. Also, from her, I got the love of travel and the desire to try new things. She gifted me the opportunity to go to France at 15 to become an exchange student for a year. During my year away, I gained so much confidence. I was alone in a country and had to become fluent in a new language. She believed in me and knew that I would be successful that year. She was always cheering me on. For that, I will be forever grateful.

My proudest moment to date would be when I was promoted to Lieutenant. I am the first female to serve as a Lieutenant on patrol for the Nicholasville Police Department. Being a Lieutenant on patrol was a career goal I aspired to achieve when I was a rookie.

The best advice I ever received was when I was young, I was taught by my dad to always have something to read. As I've grown and entered into different roles in my life, this piece of advice has been given several times by teachers and leaders that I've had. This nugget of advice has been solid and so helpful to me in every aspect of my life. I'm an avid reader and love to learn new concepts and ideas that can challenge me and improve my view. Constantly reading keeps you learning and growing as humans, which makes us better. Reading can also take us places we never dreamt we could go.
