Last but certainly not least our 3rd City Commissioner to be Featured for Women in City Leadership Month is City Commissioner Betty Black. Here is what Betty had to say:
To describe my role within the City I would first like to say the City Commissioners are divided into four basic areas of responsibility. Streets & Cemetery, Police & Fire, Water & Sewer, and Electric & Meter. Each Commissioner selects their assignment at the beginning of their term.
In my time as City Commissioner I have had the pleasure of serving with three of the four - Electric & Meter, Police & Fire, and currently Streets & Cemetery. I also serve on the annexation committee for our City Planning & Zoning. Often times I receive calls from concerned citizens regarding issues within our community and It is my pleasure to listen to the concerns to help resolve them if possible.
To name one woman who has inspired me most would be a very special lady to me, Carol Brown. She was also known to many as "Mama Carol". She was a Business Woman, Sunday School Teacher, and on more committees than one person could name. She was able to successfully navigate all of that in addition to raising a large family when she was widowed. Carol always had a positive look on life and time for others. She was one of the greatest women I’ve ever known.
My proudest accomplishment to date would be being there for Nicholasville when the economy crashed, initiating the ground work for our new Fire Station and being a part of the ground breaking, locating and increasing revenue for our Police Department with our previous city administrations. We have also began the process of placing our cemetery records online so you may locate your loved ones in our beautiful cemetery.
