The Valley View Ferry is set to cease operations on November 30 at 8 p.m. for a period of one to two months. This temporary shutdown is necessary for the ferry to undergo recertification and repairs as mandated by United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations. The current Certificate of Inspection, essential for its operation, is nearing expiration.
During this downtime, the ferry barge will be moved from the river to a dry dock where it will undergo a thorough inspection by the USCG, which is conducted every five years. Both the Valley View Ferry and the USCG prioritize the safety and well-being of passengers and crew. In addition to inspections, routine maintenance and required repairs will be performed by ferry captains and crew with assistance from contractors. All issues identified by USCG inspectors will also be addressed.
Ferry captain assessments suggest that repairs could take one to two months; however, this timeframe may extend due to weather conditions or unforeseen repair needs. Efforts are being made by ferry captains and crews to expedite the return of service.
Updates on progress and repair photos will be shared on the Valley View Ferry Facebook page.
Additionally, Martin Luther King Blvd. will be closed between East Fifth Street and Rand Ave. starting Monday, November 25 due to sanitary sewer construction.
