Mayor Linda Gorton has announced a new initiative to honor veterans in Fayette County with street banners along Vine Street. The Veterans Street Banners program will begin in November, featuring 24 inductees from the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame.

"Veterans are near and dear to my heart, and I am excited we are able to provide another opportunity to honor their service," said Mayor Gorton. She emphasized her commitment to supporting veterans, highlighting her role as the first mayor with a dedicated Veterans Affairs Liaison.

The Lexington Commission on Veterans’ Affairs collaborated with the Mayor’s Office and the Lexington History Museum for this project. Dr. Amanda Higgins, Executive Director of the museum, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with various entities to honor local veterans: "The veterans street banners are an entry point for learning more about the featured veterans, their service, and their community work after their time in the military."

Robert Larkin, Chairman of the Commission on Veterans’ Affairs, shared hopes for future expansion of the banner project: "Our hope is that the street banner project will expand and grow to include our businesses, schools, universities and throughout the community as a measure of recognition."

H.B. Deatherage from the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame expressed pride in being recognized by Lexington: "Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame feels very honored and very proud to be recognized by the City of Lexington."
