Holiday lights that are no longer in use should not be discarded, but instead brought to a designated location for recycling. The Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works in Lexington has organized a special collection drive for holiday lights, which will continue until January 12, 2025.

This initiative marks the seventh annual holiday lights collection drive. Over the years, it has successfully diverted more than 10,000 pounds of electronics from ending up in landfills. Items such as string lights and batteries can cause damage to equipment at the Recycle Center if placed in blue recycle carts or dumpsters.

The City has collaborated with local businesses and organizations to set up drop-off locations throughout Lexington where residents can bring their holiday lights. It is advisable to check the regular business hours of these locations before visiting.

Additionally, there is an option to take lights and other electronics year-round to the Electronics Recycling Center located at 1306 Versailles Road.
