Congressman Andy Barr has reintroduced the White Oak Resilience Act to address concerns about the long-term health of American white oak trees. The species plays a critical ecological role and supports Kentucky's bourbon industry. The act is a bipartisan effort aimed at preventing the decline of these trees and encouraging collaboration among federal agencies, private sectors, and land grant institutions.

"The White Oak Resilience Act is not just about saving a species of tree," stated Congressman Barr. "It’s about conserving biodiversity, strengthening rural economies, and protecting Kentucky’s bourbon industry, which depends on white oak barrels to deliver the distinct flavor that defines our world-famous product. This legislation is a smart, forward-looking investment in our economy, our environment, and our cultural heritage."

Congressman Hal Rogers expressed pride in joining his Kentucky colleague to support the legislation, emphasizing the importance of white oak logs to the local construction of bourbon barrels and wildlife. Congressman Brett Guthrie echoed this sentiment, highlighting the bill’s significance for Kentucky’s environment and economy.

"Without white oak trees, there is no Kentucky bourbon," commented Congressman James Comer. The legislation aims to ensure the continued availability of this critical resource for the distilleries.

Congressman Morgan McGarvey underlined the Act's importance for the planet, economy, and bourbon industry. Ami Bera also expressed his commitment to advancing the bill, recognizing its role in supporting diverse ecosystems and industries.

Steve Cohen emphasized the need for timely action due to the white oak's long maturation period. Jason Meyer highlighted the gap in white oak regeneration and stressed the importance of the proposed measures for promoting biodiversity and economic welfare.

The proposed legislation enables the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service to lead projects for restoration and sets up a White Oak Restoration Fund. These efforts are aimed at boosting the $9 billion Kentucky bourbon industry by ensuring the supply of high-quality white oak barrels.
