Kentucky residents, farmers, and businesses generating less than five percent of their revenue from tire sales have the opportunity to dispose of unwanted tires for free. The collection event will take place from October 31 to November 2 at the city's old landfill pad located at 1631 Old Frankfort Pike. Participants are instructed to enter through the front gates, and residency in Fayette County is not a requirement.
“We are pleased to be able to offer this free opportunity through Kentucky’s Waste Tire Collection Program,” stated John Howard, acting director of Lexington’s Division of Waste Management. “The tires we collect will be recycled into useful products such as recycled asphalt pavement, speed bumps and tire-derived fuel.”
The program welcomes both residents and most businesses; however, it excludes participation from tire retailers, scrap metal dealers, salvage yards, or recycling businesses. Additionally, any participant with a load exceeding 100 tires must bring assistance for unloading. Scavenging activities are prohibited during the event.
Collection hours allow for the acceptance of various types of tires including those on or off rims from farm equipment, bicycles, motorcycles, go-carts, ATVs, tractors, trucks, and passenger vehicles. However, large off-the-road tires and certain other types like tracks or solid-filled tires will not be accepted.
Sponsored by Kentucky’s Energy and Environment Cabinet along with Lexington’s Division of Waste Management, this initiative aims to facilitate proper disposal and recycling of waste tires.
Throughout the year, Lexington residents who receive city waste collection services can also dispose of up to four off-the-rim automobile tires per week at no charge via curbside collection.
