The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council is set to host a Transportation Expo, a drop-in event focusing on transportation-related topics. This initiative is part of the Council's ongoing efforts to engage with the public beyond regular meetings. The event aims to bring together residents, council members, and community partners to discuss policies impacting the city.

Scheduled for Saturday, October 19, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., the expo will be held at the Marksbury Family Branch of the Lexington Public Library located at 2197 Versailles Road in Lexington, KY.

The idea for this event was conceived by the Council’s Public Input Subcommittee. The subcommittee is chaired by Third District Councilmember Hannah LeGris and includes Vice Mayor Dan Wu, Councilmember At-Large Chuck Ellinger, Second District Councilmember Shayla Lynch, and Fifth District Councilmember Liz Sheehan. Since February 2023, this group has worked towards enhancing public engagement by updating public input guidelines and launching Engage Lexington, an online platform for community feedback outside traditional meeting formats.

Vice Mayor Wu highlighted that “Public comment, while an excellent opportunity for residents to share with Council, is not a dialogue and we’ve heard from our community that they want to engage with us in different ways and in different places.”

Councilmembers expressed enthusiasm about interacting with residents within their communities. “We chose transportation as the topic for this event because it impacts every district, every resident, every visitor, and every member of our community,” said Councilmember Chuck Ellinger. He added that understanding individual experiences regarding city travel is essential.

The expo will feature participation from government and community partners like the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). Chris Evilia, Manager of Transportation Planning at MPO stated that “This Expo is an excellent opportunity for folks to find out more about what our transportation planning process is and how they can be more involved in that process.”

Frontrunners, an LGBTQ non-profit run/walk club based in Lexington, also plans to engage with attendees on transportation issues. Jason Schubert from Frontrunners remarked that running and walking are central activities for their organization but acknowledged these are primary modes of transport for many individuals. “Frontrunners is committed to making our city a safer place for all pedestrians,” he mentioned.
