Mayor Linda Gorton has announced plans for Lexington's 250th anniversary, a year-long celebration set to take place in 2025. The festivities will include events each month, focusing on different themes such as wellness, history, education, and more.
"We're counting down the days," said Mayor Gorton. "Lexington is 249-and-three-quarters years old. We just can't wait until we get to 250!"
The mayor appointed the 250Lex Commission to organize the celebration. Local businesses, restaurants, and non-profit organizations are participating in hosting various events throughout the year.
Kip Cornett, Co-Chair of the 250Lex Commission, stated that the project aims at promoting growth across economic, educational, and personal dimensions. Eunice Beatty, also Co-Chair of the commission, emphasized inclusivity and cultural diversity in their planning efforts.
Mary Quinn Ramer from VisitLex highlighted how these celebrations would benefit Lexington's tourism economy by attracting visitors who will support local hospitality businesses.
The anniversary celebrations will commence with a downtown New Year's Eve event on December 31. Other planned activities include a bourbon tasting event and public art installations at Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza. An orchestral piece composed by Shawn Okpebholo will be performed by the Lexington Philharmonic at Singletary Center.
Corporate sponsors supporting these events include VisitLex, CHI Saint Joseph Health System, University of Kentucky among others. Various partners like Commerce Lexington and Smiley Pete Publishing are also contributing to this initiative.
Further details about the celebrations can be found on their soon-to-be-launched website www.250lex.com or through social media platforms @250LexKY on Facebook or X and @250LexingtonKY on Instagram.
