After 12 years, Empower Lexington: A Plan for a Resilient Community has undergone a significant update. The plan is a community-wide effort addressing how individuals, businesses, and organizations, alongside government, can support a resilient community. Sustainability encompasses the environment, economy, quality of life, and equity.

The Empower Lexington Plan was initially developed in 2012. That original document laid the groundwork for further conversations about sustainability and the City’s role. This led to additional efforts like the Complete Streets Plan and the Imagine Lexington 2045 Plan. Additionally, a full Greenhouse Gas Inventory is expected to be conducted every two years.

Groups of community members met to discuss and develop goals and strategies for the updated plan. Public feedback was gathered through meetings and surveys at multiple points in the process and will continue to be important for future actions.

Council approved the updated plan in late August. This approval allows the Sustainability Section to move forward with implementing the plan while maintaining flexibility to work with community partners on modifications as needed.

Highlights of the new plan include setting timelines for specific actions and milestones. Public input will remain a key part of this process.

In addition to LFUCG’s Empower Lexington Plan, there is an effort to create a regional Climate Action Plan involving Fayette plus Bourbon, Clark, Jessamine, Scott, and Woodford Counties. Meetings for these efforts are funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and are currently underway through this fall.
