Shooting incident near Seventh and Florida Streets leads to arrest

One person has been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred near Seventh Street and Florida Street, leaving one individual injured.

On August 28, 2024, around 6:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Seventh St and Florida St for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they located a female victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

April Newby, 42, was arrested and charged with Assault 1st Degree, Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree, Possession of Synthetic Drugs 1st Degree, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She is currently being held at the Fayette County Detention Center.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, there will be no city waste collection on Monday, Sept. 2.

On Sunday, Aug. 18, traffic on North Upper Street between Main Street and Short Street will be limited to one lane from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
