The Lexington Division of Emergency Management has issued a Phase I Heat Alert, urging agencies that work with vulnerable populations to ensure emergency plans are in place. The alert is activated when the Heat Index is expected to reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It took effect this morning and will continue through Saturday evening.
Under the alert, individuals experiencing homelessness may use LexTran services to reach cooling stations free of charge. Outreach teams, including the HopeMobile, Lexington Street Outreach, and the Compassionate Caravan, will distribute water throughout the community and assist people in getting to shady areas or cooling stations.
Lexington’s community centers, such as Dunbar, Kenwick, Castlewood, and Tates Creek, will remain open into the early evening and serve as cooling stations.
With the implementation of Phase One of Lexington’s Heat Plan, the Division of Waste Management will begin collection services an hour earlier than usual.
Additionally, parts of Parkers Mill and Cross Keys roads will be closed starting Monday, June 24, for sanitary sewer construction.
