Representative Andy Barr introduced the Building Civic Bridges Act (BCBA) alongside Representative Derek Kilmer to address the growing polarization in the United States by supporting community bridgebuilding efforts. The BCBA aims to confront contentious issues and bridge divides within the nation.

Rep. Barr emphasized the importance of the legislation, stating, "Our nation was founded on civic engagement and rigorous debate to achieve the ultimate good." He expressed pride in introducing the bill to revitalize the civic culture and bring the country together.

Rep. Kilmer highlighted inspiring local efforts to foster community understanding and build cohesion, stating, "Instead of accepting toxic polarization as the new normal, many community, faith, and civic leaders are leading efforts to foster dialogue, defuse and address sources of conflict, and bridge differences."

The BCBA proposes the creation of a non-partisan pilot program under a new Office of Civic Bridgebuilding within AmeriCorps. This program would distribute federal grants to support civic organizations and initiatives promoting civic engagement and bridgebuilding across diverse groups.

Various organizations have expressed support for the BCBA, recognizing the importance of building bridges across differences in American society. Barbara Snyder, President of AAU, commended the bill as a way to fight polarization and encourage meaningful dialogue. Sarah Bonk, founder of Business for America, highlighted the legislation as an investment in fostering dialogue, bridging differences, and healing divides in communities.

The Building Civic Bridges Act has garnered bipartisan support, with Rep. Lucy McBath stating, "Our diversity is our strength." Rep. Jenniffer González Colón emphasized the importance of building relationships across lines of difference to mitigate polarization and division.

The BCBA also received praise from Eboo Patel, Founder & President of Interfaith America, who endorsed the bill for empowering local leaders to deepen relationships within communities. Bob Reeg, CEO of Peace through Action USA, welcomed the legislation for fostering respect between diverse communities and supporting social cohesion.

Overall, the Building Civic Bridges Act aims to strengthen community relationships, promote civic engagement, and enhance the nation's capacity to tackle critical challenges. Organizations and lawmakers alike are hopeful that this bipartisan legislation will contribute to reducing polarization and fostering unity across the United States.
