Lexington, KY - Renowned Louisville artist Dave Caudill has been selected to create an original sculpture for the entrance of the Lexington Detention Center. The artwork, titled "The Birth of Hope," aims to recognize and reflect the growth, dignity, and value of individuals incarcerated at the facility.

Mayor Linda Gorton expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This work of art will be a beacon of hope and renewal to those who come and go from the Detention Center, and will add to the rich history of our arts community." The sculpture is expected to be installed in late 2024.

The selection committee for the sculpture consisted of detention center employees, public art commission members, and local Lexington artists. Heather Lyons, Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs in the Mayor's Office, highlighted the significance of the sculpture, stating, "This inspiring sculpture is the direct result of Lexington's Percent for Art Program, which was established to support the creation of new works of art accessible to the public at no charge."

Dave Caudill, a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the Louisville School of Art, has a distinguished career creating artworks for public, corporate, and private collections. His previous public works can be found in notable locations such as Louisiana's Rip Van Winkle Gardens, East Tennessee's Horizon Center Park, and the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts. Caudill is also the creator of the "Spirit of Peace" Award, presented to individuals like former First Lady Rosalynn Carter for their contributions to mental health support.

Caudill expressed his vision for the sculpture, saying, "With 'The Birth of Hope,' I want to honor the profoundly important hopes of all who are connected to the Lexington Detention Center." The artwork is expected to serve as an icon for the facility and further enhance the positive reputation of the Detention Center in the community.

The sculpture will be placed in the Old Frankfort Pike corridor, a National Scenic Byway that serves the Detention Center, local businesses, and attracts numerous tourists with its world-class scenery. This placement will ensure that the artwork is accessible and visible to all.
