The new Hope Center Temporary Winter Shelter, located at 381 W. Loudon Ave., opened today.

With the capacity to accommodate up to 160 individuals, and availability to expand during severe weather, the Hope Center Temporary Winter Shelter will provide those in need with a season-long shelter that offers individuals a safe, warm place to stay for the duration of the winter season. The temporary shelter will be open from November through the end of March.

The shelter will be operated by the Hope Center, and individuals will have access to case management and referral sources through the Hope Center staff and other community providers.

The YMCA of Central Kentucky allowed the city to place the shelter on its property.

The shelter is the result of meetings the city began last spring to reimagine the community’s winter weather response. Key to the plan was the availability of a season-long temporary shelter that offers individuals a safe and warm place to stay during the winter season.

Funding for the project will support 24/7 private security for persons accessing the shelter, as well as the neighboring community.
