Surveying has commenced for a project aimed at enhancing safety along a busy corridor in Lexington. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, in collaboration with the City of Lexington, is gathering data on Northeast New Circle Road, which has been identified as the city's top Priority Safety Corridor.
Over the next month, contractors will conduct surveys to collect data necessary for developing plans to improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. This commercial and residential corridor experienced the highest number of fatal and serious injury crashes in Lexington from 2015 to 2021. During this period, there were 34 fatal or severe crashes. Nearly half of these incidents involved pedestrians or bicyclists who had limited access to sidewalks, bike facilities, ADA-accessible transit stops, and safe pedestrian crossings.
The project is managed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and funded by a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant awarded to the City of Lexington by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant provides $21.7 million for three significant efforts aimed at reducing fatal and serious injury crashes.
Preliminary project plans are expected to be available for community review in the summer of 2025.
Part of Delong Road will be limited to one lane of traffic from Monday, Sept. 16 to Friday, Oct. 4.
Fayette County residents can dispose of household materials such as paint and cleaners at the city’s fall Household Hazardous Waste event.
Cyclists of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in Cycle September.
