Mayor Linda Gorton of Lexington, along with representatives from various utility companies and environmental services, came together to declare April 15 – 19 as "Work Zone Awareness Week" in the city. This declaration was made to emphasize the importance of safe driving through work zones as part of the National Work Zone Awareness Week campaign. The theme for this year's campaign is "Work zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever."

Gorton highlighted the crucial role of road workers in improving the city and responding to emergencies, stating, “We rely on our road workers to improve our city and respond in a time of need. By slowing down, using caution, and paying attention, we can all do our part to keep everyone safe.”

According to data from Kentucky, in 2022, there were 1,074 work-zone-related crashes, resulting in 271 injuries and 6 deaths. To prevent such incidents, drivers are encouraged to adhere to reduced speed limits, maintain full attentiveness by avoiding distractions, and be vigilant of roadway workers and equipment when entering a work zone.

In addition to raising awareness about work zone safety, Lexington will also be hosting its third annual Bike Month in May, calling on residents to participate and contribute to its success.

As the city gears up for these initiatives, it is crucial for all individuals to prioritize safety on the roads and in work zones, ensuring the well-being of both workers and motorists.
