Lexington, KY. (April 5, 2024) — Reforest the Bluegrass, Lexington’s annual tree-planting event, will celebrate its 25th anniversary Saturday, April 13, at Coldstream Park, the site of the program’s first planting.
"Reforest the Bluegrass is focused on bringing our community together to improve our environment," stated Mayor Linda Gorton. She emphasized the importance of trees in enhancing the quality of life in Lexington by stating, "Trees help make Lexington a better place to live by cooling urban environments, purifying air and water, and improving people’s mental and physical well-being."
Heather Wilson, Program Manager Sr. for Urban and Community Forestry, expressed her enthusiasm for the event by saying, "We are excited to invite the community to plant seedlings with us at the 25th anniversary of Reforest the Bluegrass." Wilson highlighted the significant impact of the program over the years, with 18,000 volunteers having planted more than 215,000 seedlings and restored over 200 acres of floodplain since its inception.
Volunteers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in this year's event, which will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 13 at Coldstream Park. Participants will have the opportunity to plant trees, enjoy a free lunch, receive a t-shirt, and engage in various activities related to trees and environmental conservation.
Following the anniversary event, the Reforest at Home program will continue for a fifth year on April 20. Fayette County residents can obtain free trees at designated locations, with a variety of large shade tree seedlings and small flowering tree seedlings available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Reforest the Bluegrass has enjoyed the support of private and public partners throughout its 25-year history. Notable sponsors include Kentucky Utilities, Kentucky American Water, Quantrell Subaru, John’s Run/Walk Shop, and several other organizations dedicated to environmental conservation.
