Lexington’s Public Art Commission, in collaboration with the city, has announced a new initiative inviting local artists to contribute to the beautification of Lexington-Fayette County by creating artworks for utility boxes. The project aims to transform the nondescript, gray metal boxes scattered around the city into vibrant pieces of art.
Mayor Linda Gorton expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Public art breathes life into our communities, and this project will help us expand our cultural footprint into neighborhoods lacking public art."
Heather Lyons, the Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs in the Mayor’s Office, emphasized the importance of creating designs that resonate with the local audience, saying, "Interested artists should consider designs that will be relevant and accessible to Lexington audiences, and those that will reflect an original idea, design, or concept."
Local artists and design teams are encouraged to participate by submitting their original designs for consideration. Selected designs will be digitally printed onto vinyl art wraps and installed on utility boxes throughout Lexington this summer. The project aims to prioritize locations in districts with limited public art presence.
Those interested in participating can access the request for proposals (RFP) and application on the Public Arts Commission website. The deadline for proposal submissions is 11 p.m. on Friday, April 19th. A selection committee comprising Public Arts Commission members, arts professionals, and community stakeholders will evaluate the entries based on criteria such as the quality and appropriateness of the design concept.
Upon review of all submissions, selected artists will be notified in early May. For more information and details on how to apply, visit lexingtonky.gov/boards/public-arts-commission.
In addition to the art project, a grant program for social service agencies has expanded its eligibility criteria to include mental health as a new priority area. Furthermore, a temporary road closure on Devonport Drive is scheduled to begin on March 27 for sewer construction, with an anticipated duration of two weeks.
Residents are also encouraged to participate in Earth Hour this Saturday, dedicating sixty minutes to activities that contribute to the betterment of the planet.
