The City of Lexington is gearing up for the second year of its Solarize Lexington program, aimed at promoting solar panel installation to decrease residents' dependence on the electric grid. Mayor Linda Gorton expressed satisfaction with the program's success, stating, “We are pleased that the first year of Solarize Lexington has been a success. Lexington residents are clearly interested in reducing their reliance on the electric grid, and we’re happy to be able to provide resources to assist in that.”

Solarize Lexington facilitates connections between participants and Solar Energy Solutions, guiding residents through the solar installation process and leveraging bulk-purchasing power for households. The program is not limited to homeowners in Fayette County; non-profits, small businesses, and places of worship are also encouraged to apply. Those interested can join a Solar 101 virtual webinar on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. by registering at lexingtonky.gov/solar.

Steve Ricketts, Executive Director of the Kentucky Solar Energy Society, emphasized the significance of the program, stating, “Solarize Lexington represents the biggest ever grass-roots community solar program in Kentucky. We have done the shopping, so you don’t have to. If people in Lexington want to go solar this year, there is no better place to make it happen than through this partnership.”

The city has allocated limited funds for qualified low to moderate-income homeowners interested in solar panel installation. Eligibility is based on various factors such as household income, family size, roof orientation, structure, and sun exposure. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Participants are responsible for the costs of solar panels and installation, as all contracts will be between the household and the solar installer.

It is important to note that the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government will not assume any liability related to the solar panel installation process. To learn more about the program and express interest, individuals are encouraged to visit the solar page on the city's website.

In addition to the Solarize program, the city's Stormwater Quality Projects Incentive Grant Program is currently accepting applications for projects aimed at reducing stormwater runoff and enhancing water quality.
