Lexington, Jan 18 2024 - The City of Lexington is bracing for another round of snow and bitter temperatures, leading to the cancellation of waste collection scheduled for Friday, Jan. 19. The decision was made with the safety and well-being of residents in mind.

Mayor Linda Gorton emphasized the city's commitment to keeping residents safe and warm during this challenging weather. She urged residents to stay off the roads if possible and limit their time outside. Additionally, the Mayor encouraged everyone to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly, and ensure the protection of pets from the bitter cold.

City departments have come together to discuss weather plans and make necessary preparations. The Division of Streets and Roads, with the assistance of Water Quality employees, is pre-treating roads with a brine and beet mixture known as "Beet Heet." This sugar additive derived from beets helps the salt work at a lower temperature and improves its effectiveness on the pavement.

In anticipation of the weather, city crews are ready to work 12-hour shifts to ensure the roads remain safe. Chief Lawrence Weathers of the Lexington Police Department emphasized the need for motorists to exercise caution on the roads. He advised giving plenty of time to reach destinations, increasing the distance between vehicles, and using a lower gear for better traction. In case of emergencies, residents are urged to call 911.

The Fire Department has also taken precautionary measures, such as winterizing pumps, to be prepared for any emergencies that may arise. Chief Jason Wells emphasized the importance of allowing water faucets to drip as a preventative measure against frozen pipes.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, Waste Management is staying on course. Employees have been issued hand and toe warmers, and frequent breaks are encouraged to protect them from the winter weather. However, residents should be aware that materials may freeze in the containers due to the frigid temperatures, making it difficult to remove everything. Any changes to the collection pickup schedule will be communicated to residents accordingly.

In light of the extreme weather, some city services and programs have been affected. The Senior Center will not have instructor-led activities today, and all Satellite Centers are closed. The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has extended the activation of the Emergency Winter Weather Plan through next Monday morning. Efforts to reach and assist individuals experiencing homelessness will continue, with a particular focus on providing hats, gloves, and toiletries.

The City of Lexington remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents during this winter weather. The Mayor's office and city departments are working diligently to respond to the needs of the community and provide necessary resources. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official channels for any further details or changes.
