Due to inclement weather, waste collection in Lexington scheduled for Friday, Jan. 19 has been canceled, according to an announcement from the city officials. The decision was made in order to prioritize the safety of residents and workers during severe weather conditions.

The cancellation of waste collection was announced on Jan. 18, 2024, and residents are advised to hold onto their waste until the next scheduled collection day. More information regarding waste collection can be found on the city's website.

In other news, the Lex End Homelessness Continuum of Care (CoC) is seeking teams of volunteers to participate in the upcoming LexCount. The event is aimed at conducting a count of individuals and households experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Lexington.

"The LexCount takes place from 10 – 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2024," stated the announcement. Volunteers will be responsible for visiting various outdoor locations where homeless individuals might sleep overnight, conducting surveys, facilitating access to emergency shelter, and distributing care packages.

To ensure safety during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, teams will consist of no more than four individuals. Each team is required to provide their own transportation, with at least one designated driver. The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention encourages teams to connect with experienced providers and even request a Lexington Police Department officer to join them in the field.

"Mandatory training and check-in procedures will be provided to team captains upon completion of registration," the announcement added. Volunteers are expected to complete a 35-minute on-demand training webinar via Zoom prior to the Jan. 31 LexCount.

Residents interested in volunteering for the LexCount can register through the city's website, with only the team captain required to submit the registration form. The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention will strive to accommodate requests for police officer assignments, although it cannot guarantee their availability.

For any suggestions or problems regarding the volunteer registration process, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the city officials.

In summary, waste collection in Lexington on Friday, Jan. 19 has been canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Lex End Homelessness Continuum of Care is seeking volunteers for the upcoming LexCount event, which aims to assist individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the city.
