Lexington, Kentucky - As temperatures drop and icy conditions persist, the city of Lexington is urging residents to take extra caution when driving and venturing outdoors. The area is expected to face a wind chill of minus 9 on Wednesday morning.
According to the city's Streets & Roads and Water Quality crews, road conditions will be closely monitored throughout the night. The night crew will be on standby to address any calls for service until Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. Residents are advised to be extra careful while driving, as roads are expected to refreeze, creating hazardous conditions.
In light of the extreme cold temperatures, Mayor's Office spokesperson, John Smith, emphasizes the importance of taking additional precautions. Smith stated, "Remember that extreme cold temperatures require additional precautions. Wear multiple layers when going outside and limit exposed skin by wearing a hat, gloves, and face coverings."
The Lexington Senior Center will remain open on Wednesday, although instructor-led activities and classes will be canceled, and lunch will not be served. However, the satellite centers at the Bell House, Charles Young Center, and Eldercrafters at the Black and Williams Center will be closed.
The Lexington Police Department responded to numerous collision reports during the afternoon, indicating the hazardous road conditions. Police Sergeant Jane Doe advises drivers to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses as they tend to become slick first.
