One Lexington is set to host its first “Symposium on Youth & Young Adult Gun Violence” on Oct. 20 at UK’s Spindletop Hall, 3414 Ironworks Pike.

The one-day event will feature engagement with national speakers, professional development sessions on violence disruption, and presentations on compassion fatigue, bystander awareness, engaging the Latino community, and more.

“This symposium is a wonderful opportunity for our community to shine a light on the amazing work and tireless commitment of our One Lexington Team and our community partners, as we continue our focus on reducing gun violence,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “Lexington has seen a 40 percent decrease in homicides, and a 40 percent decrease in shootings when compared to this time last year. I appreciate the hard work of our police officers and our One Lexington community volunteers.”

Director of One Lexington, Devine Carama said although we have made progress, there is still a lot of work to do. “This symposium will highlight our volunteer frontline organizations, update the city on One Lexington’s strategic plan, identify gaps in programming and services, provide professional development workshops, discuss best practices in violence prevention strategies, and create spaces where volunteers can connect with gun violence reduction programs.”

Those interested in registering for the Symposium can complete the registration form here. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, Oct. 13.
