Lexington's Recycle Center will undergo a temporary closure from December 4 to December 15. The closure is necessary for the replacement of the baler and a fabric structure at the facility. During this period, residents can continue using recycle carts and dumpsters, but collected materials will be directed to landfills.

Residents with city waste collection services are advised that their last opportunity to put out recyclable materials before the center reopens on December 16 is prior to the shutdown. The City encourages holding onto recyclables if possible, prioritizing aluminum and steel cans and cardboard over glass, paper, and plastic.

The baler plays a crucial role in compacting sorted recyclables into large blocks for vendors responsible for recycling. Meanwhile, the fabric structure serves as a roof over the tipping floor where trucks unload materials, preventing them from getting wet or dispersed by wind.

The new baler was ordered more than a year ago and its installation cannot be postponed due to frequent breakdowns of the current equipment. Consequently, both the baler and fabric structure will be replaced simultaneously during this shutdown.

This closure affects all communities that utilize Lexington's Recycle Center including Anderson County, Berea, Boyle County, Clark County, Danville, Frankfort, Franklin County, Georgetown, Harrison County, Harrodsburg, Jessamine County, Lawrenceburg, Madison County, Montgomery County, Nicholasville, Scott County, Shelby County, Shelbyville, Simpsonville,Versailles, and Winchester.

For updates on Recycle Center operations or changes in collection schedules during this period residents can sign up for text alerts by texting their regular collection day (MONDAY,TUESDAY THURSDAY or FRIDAY)to 888777 or opt-in for email notifications.
