In an announcement made today by Mayor Linda Gorton, Bryan Station High School seniors Michelle Moore and Aline Sandoval Cano have been named the recipients of the 2024 “Be the Change” scholarships. The scholarships, each worth $10,000, aim to support students of color interested in pursuing studies in criminal justice or related fields at a Kentucky college or university.

Expressing her congratulations, Mayor Gorton highlighted the importance of these students' commitment to serving the community in the realm of criminal justice or public safety. She emphasized, "This scholarship program is providing new opportunities for our young people to become leaders who will have a positive impact on our community."

The “Be the Change” scholarship program is a result of a collaborative effort between the City of Lexington, Galls, and Central Bank. Galls CEO Mike Fadden expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “At Galls, we are proud to serve those who serve, including the brave members of the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police."

Similarly, Central Bank Chairman, President, and CEO Luther Deaton reiterated the institution's commitment to providing equitable educational opportunities in criminal justice and public safety through the scholarship program.

The overarching goal of the scholarship initiative is to create pathways for students of color while also addressing racial disparities within the criminal justice system. Devine Carama, Director of ONE Lexington, stressed the importance of empowering young people to be catalysts for change within the systems they aim to improve, stating, “Nothing breeds diversity like diversity itself."

Both scholarship recipients, Moore and Sandoval Cano, are seniors at Bryan Station High School and have plans to further their education at the University of Kentucky.

The “Be the Change” scholarship not only recognizes academic achievement but also aims to inspire young leaders to make a difference in their communities by pursuing careers in criminal justice and public safety.
