Congressman Andy Barr has announced the reintroduction of the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act, a legislative effort aimed at addressing the fentanyl crisis in the United States by targeting Chinese producers. The legislation seeks to amend the Fentanyl Sanctions Act, allowing for sanctions on Chinese individuals and organizations involved in synthetic opioid production, sale, financing, or transportation. It also targets entities that do not cooperate with U.S. counternarcotics efforts or fail to implement adequate "know-your-customer" procedures.
Congressman Barr stated, "The Chinese Communist Party plays a prominent role in every step of the fentanyl crisis, from producing precursor chemicals to laundering cartel profits that fund the illegal trafficking into the United States." He expressed his intention to work with the Trump administration to address this issue.
Dr. Greg Murphy echoed these concerns, highlighting the impact of fentanyl on American communities: “The tragic opioid epidemic in America is fueled by fentanyl shipped over from China and smuggled into our communities through Mexico.” He emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for flooding America with illicit fentanyl.
Rep. Zach Nunn also voiced his support for holding China accountable: “Fentanyl is the number one killer of Americans from my daughter’s age to my age. Something has to change.” He stressed that securing the border and cutting off supply sources are crucial steps in tackling this issue.
