Thanks to a collaborative partnership between the City of Nicholasville, Jessamine County Fiscal Court, Nicholasville/Jessamine County Parks & Recreation, and others, 2023 saw significant upgrades to local parks.

Each year, upon replacing their field, the New Orleans Saints NFL team donates the Caesars Superdome turf from the previous season to worthy projects across the country. This past year, Nicholasville was selected as a recipient. Turf Alliance, a sports construction company, facilitated the application for this donation for use at the John Preece Park Athletic Facility. This marks the first time this donation has been awarded to a Kentucky community.

The donated turf was used to create football and soccer fields. Due to the large size of NFL fields, there will be surplus turf available for other projects. The extra turf will be utilized to build high school softball fields and youth baseball fields.

Doug Blackford, Director General Government stated: "Plans for the construction of a new stadium are also underway. This stadium will include bleachers, locker rooms, concession stands, restroom facilities, and more." The City aims to begin hosting games at these new facilities in spring 2024.

Phase two of this development involves constructing a multi-purpose indoor facility near John Preece Park. This facility will feature a gymnasium, an indoor walking track, and community rooms for meetings and parties. Bids for this phase of construction are expected to be accepted beginning in late 2024.

Other park updates include completing the splash pad at Lake Mingo Park. By spring 2024, community members can enjoy new water features and resurfaced walk paths at the park.

Rock Fence Park on 3rd Street also received enhancements in 2023 with new playground equipment and a concert stage built for residents' enjoyment.

These park improvements were partially funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. City Commissioners have dedicated time and resources towards enhancing facilities for Nicholasville residents' betterment.
