The City of Lexington has petitioned the Kentucky Public Service Commission to intervene in a case regarding the proposed location of a solar energy facility on a Fayette County farm. East Kentucky Power Cooperative has requested permission from the Commission to build the facility, which would be located on 387 acres zoned for agricultural purposes in eastern Fayette County.
Mayor Linda Gorton expressed concerns about the potential impact on land use policies and the local economy. "The city does not currently allow for commercial solar facilities under its zoning ordinances," Gorton stated. "We need time to study and create a plan concerning solar facilities that serve the best interest of Fayette County."
Gorton emphasized the importance of agriculture to the local economy, noting that agriculture and agribusiness contribute over $2.3 billion annually. She highlighted that the city has historically limited commercial and industrial uses in agricultural zones.
While supporting renewable energy, Gorton stressed that the city should have input on such projects' siting within Fayette County. She also questioned the benefits of the proposed project to local consumers. "All or nearly all of the energy produced would be sold on a wholesale market and provide little to no energy to Lexington consumers," she said.
In related news, there will be no city waste collection on Monday, May 27, due to Memorial Day. Additionally, South Mill Street will be temporarily closed between High Street and Maxwell Street starting Tuesday, May 28, for sanitary sewer construction.
