 Boggero Awarded CCTS Pilot Award

The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) congratulates Dr. Ian Boggero on being awarded the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS) Pilot Award. The award was given to support Boggero’s study, in collaboration with the University of Cincinatti’s Dr. Christopher King, “Feasibility of Using Daily Diaries in Young Adults with Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions.”

UK CCTS is a founding member of the Appalachian Translational Research Network (ATRN), an organization that addresses significant health challenges and disparities specific to Appalachia by enhancing community research collaborations. The purpose of the CCTS Pilot Award is to fund pilot projects that strengthen the development of sustainable partnerships between academic research and community stakeholders for translational research.

“The CCTS being a member of the ATRN has significantly impacted my career by providing me with the resources, training, and mentorship needed to enact my line of research on effectively delivering pain psychology services to the greater KY population,” stated Boggero.

Speaking on working with the University of Cincinnati on this effort, Boggero said, “My collaborations in in Cincinnati date back to 2018, when I started my postdoctoral training in the lab of Christopher King (the other principal investigator (PI) on this project). Both myself and Dr. King helped conceptualize and refine this current project. Working with the group at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and UC is always a pleasure, as they have some of the leading experts in the world on pediatric pain psychology and on the role, sleep plays in the chronic pain experience of children, adolescents, and young adults.”

Dr. Luciana Shaddox, UKCD Associate Dean for Research, stated, “Dr. Boggero’s proposed research is impactful as it will obtain the necessary data to test psychological contributors to overlapping chronic pain conditions in the future. This is particularly timely given the prevalence of comorbid chronic pain, the opioid epidemic, and the impact such conditions have had on Appalachian and racial minority populations in Kentucky.”
