Men's Basketball lose to Hampden Sydney in Nashville Tournament

The Pioneers have traveled down to right outside Nashville, TN at Welch College to take on the Hampden Sydney Tigers. The Pioneers faced the Tigers in the first game of their Nashville Tournament where they looked to build on their last win against Blackburn in the Don Lane Classic. Sadly our pioneers took a first day loss at the hands of a highly motivated Hampden Sydney. They are coming off a loss to #1 Christopher Newport which added fuel to the fire resulting in our Pio's losing 54-82.

The Pioneers had a rough first half, shooting the ball poorly from the field at 29% and going 1-10 from 3 point land. Jaylen Green played with a high motor, being the only starter to reach double digits. The half ended 17-38.

The second half allowed for an opportunity from the bench. Freshman Daniel Mullins, who was able to break out with a career high 15 points while going 100% from the line provided a lift. Mullins however didn't have enough to bring the Pios back even while shooting at 73% from 3 in the second, and with the Tigers playing at a tempo so fast, it was too much for our Pios to overcome.

Head Coach Brian Lane had this to say after the game:

"We had too many first half turnovers and gave up too many offensive rebounds. We did not respond to how physical the game was at all. HSC sped us up to a level we had not seen all season.  In the second half we showed a lot more composure cutting the lead to almost single digits. It will be a quick turnaround with a noon tip before returning to Kentucky to get ready for HCAC conference play with a Dec. 28 matchup at Franklin."

•    Jaylen Green: 12 Points 11 Rebounds

•    Daniel Mullins: 15 Points

The Pioneers look to bounce back quickly tomorrow where they play back at Welch College at Noon (12PM), to take on Roanoke College.
