Eagles Honor Four Seniors Ending Regular Season With a Win Over Welch, 84-58
The Asbury women's basketball team concluded their regular season on Saturday afternoon by defeating Welch College in an 84-58 game. Asbury's four seniors honored included Meagan Bellamy, Jaclynn Ruble, Cheyenne Fullwood, and Kiely Flynn.
Haleigh Releford led the Eagles with 19 points and five steals. Releford had an outstanding performance on the court going 73% in the field and 60% from the distance. Releford also collected seven rebounds and three assists.
Another large contributor for the Eagles was Trinity Shearer grabbing 17 points. Shearer was on fire in the field going 88% and shooting 75% from the line. Shearer was a massive force defensively for the Eagles recording four steals and seven rebounds.
Spencer Harvey was the third Eagle to put up double-digits in points against the Flames. Harvey also grabbed five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Senior, Cheyenne Fullwood only saw 15 minutes on the court and managed to contribute seven points, two blocks, five rebounds, and one assist. All four of these attributes marked season-highs for Fullwood.
Kayla Harlow led AU's presence under the rim with eight rebounds and two blocks. Harlow was also able to put up five points for the Eagles.
Both teams entered the game with a strong drive to take an early lead. Haleigh Releford grabbed six points and two steals in the first to aid AU's lead over the Flames, which they would go on to hold for the remainder of the game. Asbury outscored Welch 23-17 and ended the first on top.
Trinity Shearer turned up the heat in the second and grabbed 58% of AU's total points in the quarter. Shearer shot 100% with four baskets in the field and 75% on the line in the second quarter. Asbury continued to outscore the Flames and grabbed 19 in the second compared to Welch's 13, and ended the second still up, 42-30.
Spencer Harvey took the torch in the third leading AU with eight points. The third marked Asbury's highest-scoring quarter with 25 points on the board compared to the Flames' 11. The third ended with AU having a major lead over Welch, 67-41.
Welch was led by No.11 Olivia Delk with 13 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and two steals.
Welch began to show some drive in the fourth matching Asbury with 17 points. Haleigh Releford helped the Eagles secure their win by tallying eight points and shooting 100% across the court in the fourth. The game ended with AU victorious, 84-58.
Asbury forced 25 turnovers from Welch and converted those into 32 points. Asbury's defense stayed sharp today grabbing 20 steals.
AU also recorded 40 points in the paint and 10 points off of fast-breaks.
Asbury will conclude their regular season with a record of 15-10 as they look to postseason competition.
