Kentucky men’s basketball players Otega Oweh and Malachi Moreno received All-Southeastern Conference honors on Mar. 9, with Oweh named to the second team and Moreno selected for the all-freshman team as voted by league coaches.
These recognitions highlight the strong performances of both athletes during the season. Oweh’s selection marks his second consecutive appearance on the All-SEC Second Team, while Moreno becomes the first Kentucky player under head coach Mark Pope to earn a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
Oweh, a senior guard, has delivered career-best averages this season with 18.2 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, along with 4.5 rebounds. He scored in double figures in 30 out of 31 regular-season games and reached at least 20 points in 16 games. During SEC play, he averaged 21.1 points per game and surpassed the 20-point mark in 14 of 18 conference games—the most by any player in the SEC this year. Over his two-year career at Kentucky, Oweh has recorded twenty-two games against SEC opponents with at least twenty points, which is more than any Wildcat since at least the 1996-97 season.
Moreno has made an immediate impact as a freshman center, starting in most games and leading Kentucky in rebounding and blocked shots. He is averaging 8.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and leads freshmen in blocks within the conference while shooting nearly sixty percent from the field. The Wildcats have won ten out of eleven games when Moreno scores in double figures this season.
One of Moreno’s standout moments was his game-winning buzzer beater against LSU that completed an eighteen-point comeback for Kentucky. He was also recently named to the SEC Community Service Team.
Kentucky will begin its participation in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday against LSU at noon Eastern Time on SEC Network.
