The Kentucky Softball team defeated Miami (Ohio) 1-0 on Mar. 31, with pitcher Sarah Haendiges delivering a complete-game shutout and striking out six batters.
The only run of the game came in the first inning when Carly Sleeman led off with a single, advanced on a bunt by Allie Blum, and scored on an RBI single from Karissa Hamilton. This proved to be enough as Haendiges kept Miami scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Haendiges left eight RedHawks stranded on base and threw exactly 100 pitches over seven innings, allowing just five hits and two walks while retiring 25 of the 33 batters she faced. The win marks Kentucky’s second victory over Miami this season; their previous meeting was on Opening Day in San Diego at the start of the year.
Kentucky now holds a record of 22-16 and will return to Southeastern Conference play against No. 3 Oklahoma at Love’s Field later this week. Thursday and Friday’s games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with Saturday’s finale set for noon.
Hamilton was named key player after going one-for-three with her first RBI of the season. A crucial moment occurred in the sixth inning when Haendiges struck out two consecutive hitters to leave runners stranded at second and third base.
