U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) has introduced the Defend Girls Athletics Act, a legislative measure designed to support and enforce President Trump’s Executive Order that prohibits biological males from participating in girls’ sports. The bill aims to ensure compliance by tying federal education funding to adherence to this order.
According to a 2024 United Nations study, biological males have won numerous medals in women’s sports, impacting female athletes’ achievements. Recent incidents in California and Minnesota highlight the ongoing trend of biological boys competing in girls’ sports.
The legislation also addresses safety concerns, citing cases like Payton McNabb’s injury during a volleyball match against a biological male opponent.
“Biological boys don’t belong in girls’ sports, period,” said Congressman Barr. He emphasized his commitment as a father of two daughters who play sports. Riley Gaines, former University of Kentucky swimmer, expressed her support for the act, highlighting the importance of protecting women’s rights and dignity.
House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-MI), co-lead of the act, stated that it is about fairness and safeguarding opportunities for young women. Congressman Brett Guthrie (R-KY) added that educational institutions not complying with the executive order should not receive federal funds.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) emphasized accountability and protection for students through this policy. Congressman Troy Nehls (R-TX) reiterated that states or schools allowing men to compete in women’s sports should lose federal funding privileges.
The act reinforces Congress’s backing of President Trump’s Executive Order against noncompliant schools following Maine Governor Janet Mills’ stance on transgender policies.
